Doesn't this make no sense? Or am I missing something?
October 25, 2008 - I went to the dollar store and they had a sign on the window that said "We Accept Food Stamps" I could not find any food in the place at all. I thought food stamps were just for ...
- http://www.fns.usda.gov/fsp/applicant_recipients/using_foodstamps.htm ... Here is what they are to be used for.
- the dollar store i go to has food...its more like junk food and snacks.....probably cause it lies a few feet away from the grocery store....
- Some of our dollar stores have a lot of food in them.
- Are you being sarcastic or disingenuous with this question or am I making unwarranted assumptions - because I always assumed that food stamps were traded for goods other than food as a form of currency. I know it's not supposed to work like that, but isn't that the reality of it? ... Do you genuinely not know, or is the Q just a dig at those who abuse the system? ... Or perhaps I have misunderstood the whole concept? ... After all, aren't the signs stating "We Accept Food Stamps" simply euphemisms for "Trade Your Food Stamps For Beer & Lottery Tickets Here"?
- It is only for food, pop and candy included. You cannot use it to purchase toothpaste or toilet tissue. That makes no sense to me, because if you are eating you need that other stuff, too. ... (We used food stamps when my husband was injured and unable to work for a few months. I was glad for it.)
- Food stamps are STRICTLY for food...in fact, there are even restrictions on the food itself (it cannot be prepared food, like a fried chicken or a sandwich from the deli)......vitamins- which are a food, are also not allowed, nor are certain ingestible items- take Hall's cough drops for example: NO......but bubblegum, candy, YES. Go figure. But they are for food and food only, as long as it's unprepared. Most dollar stores I have seen carry SOME food (if you could call it that), usually junk or junky food that's been rejected by other stores, is from Mexico, or pretty old. Unless you can see dates, don't buy it. And it's illegal for that store to advertise as such if in fact they have no food. Most people now have an EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) card, and some people get both money and food stamps, and it all goes on this card, so theoretically you can also get cash if you are one of those in that category. I've also seen people buy or use their cards to buy cigarettes, whatever, and this is highly illegal. With paper food stamps this is much harder to do, but they became cumbersome and a lot of people would buy a piece of candy for a nickel, just to get the change back, the 95 cents. It's an archaic system that needs a lot of revamping......while I realize you can economize more by buying and cooking your own food, I think you ought to have the option if you want to go get a Big Mac or whatever......
