All those that live with chronic, how do you deal from day to day?
September 9, 2008 - Have lots of back problems. I have 6 hernieted discs(that I know, we have never done an MRI of the thoracic spine). I had a fusion in my neck and I also have a hemangioma on one of my vertebrae that is causing pain. The back pain causes arm and leg pain, my right leg goes numb all the time and then my left leg picks up the slack, making my knee hurt. I am 28 and have been dealing with the worst of this for 3 years. I know this will be a life long battle. All of those that have had chronic pain for many more years then me, what have you done and what are you with pain control efforts? What kind of road am I heading down I guess is what I want to know?
Just so everyone knows, I do work 12 hour shifts 3 days a week at a hospital, so I am pretty much on a run during those times. I have 3 children. The 2 oldest are in school and walk them to the bus stop. I clean my house, do yard work, walk the dogs. Everything that everyone else does. I am not just sitting on a couch crying over the pain. My life does not allow for that kind of idleness.
I'm so sorry that you have to deal with chronic pain. I'm 15 and have a chronic pain condition which I've had since I was 13, I have Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy/Complex Regional Pain Syndrome in my right leg from my knee to my toes which I got from a knee surgery that I had. I have done many different things for my chronic pain, some of the most helpful things have been working with a pain management counselor to learn coping techniques, and ways to help keep my mind off of the pain when things are really bad. I currently take no pain meds because they just do not help enough, and my spinal cord stimulator is now not working so I'm going to have to move onto other treatments. I would suggest working with a pain management doctor, I've found that they are typically very helpful in dealing with chronic pain, and when you are able to find the right ones, they do what they can to help you get your pain under control, and they try not to just give you meds. Good luck!
- Neurostimulation. A Godsend miracle. It saved my life and sanity. It also saved me from a life full of daily, constent pain. Without having to re-tell my pain story and how I conquered it I will send you to the site where my full story, condensed, is. I have one my battle with chronic pain and now have gone from just wanting peace and death to smiling, laughing, living and loving life again. I can't believe that my years of pain are over. Thank God. www.tamthepain.com.au Wendy's story I know just how lonley and long pain can be and make you feel. There can be a light at the end of the tunnel. I found it.
- I have several herniated discs as well. I used to be in bad shape, but one doctor told me that if I just got out and walked, I'd get better. Walk. Right. I could bearly stand. But I tried. I started out just walking around the house and to the mail box and back. Everyday I walked a little farther. I also did exercises to build up my stomach muscles. If you can find a beginners pilates class, I would recommend that or yoga. Either will strengthen your abs and build the muscle you need to support your back. I'm not pain free, but I'm able to do most things. I was 28 when I first hurt my back and I'm 47 now and apart from occasional burning sensations on my legs when I've lifted something too heavy, I'm doing great. Knock on wood. I hope you can push through the pain to the other side as I did.

- I can't imagine what you are going through. I would get the very best back doctors in the country to find out what can be done. Mayo Clinic in Minnesota is good and John Hopkins in Boston are the best of the best. I'd go there ..your primary doctor can fill out the form and say you need to be seen within a month / so you will not need to wait a year for an appt. I would want to have the root cause of the pain dealt with . Next , if there are no options left, i'd get appts with pain management doctors to figure out how to take all the meds to manage it. Seriously , research who the best doctors are and get in to see a couple of them for opinions. You are too young to live like that. My mom had two discs .. I think L 2 , L3 maybe ... lower back. It was terrible pain for her / we had to call 911 to get her in the hospital. She couldn't walk / get out of her bed. They did a surgery , a really tiny incision ( maybe 2 - 2/12 inches ) on her back and fixed the discs / nerves . One was bulging the other one was fragmented. She was better immediatly after surgery. The surgeon made the incision sewn from the inside out / used some glue stuff and you can't even barely see this scar now. Two weeks and she was in really good shape. Good Luck to you / hope you reach a full recovery.
