Got some money and a high level of interest in producing professional looking final products on a good "off-the-shelf" home PC Adobe Premiere (About $700, student discounts are available) ... ... Got little money, but want to do more than the free windows movie-maker will let you do: I like Arcsoft's Showbiz, I have also heard good things about Adobe's after effects. ... ... Premiere and Avid both function in a similar way, and are used by pro studios dealing with huge projects. Once learned it all makes sense, but is a lot of software for the average home user. ... ... Most of the "idiot proof" software is very easy to learn, and gives a very nice final product. If you never intend on using multiple video track effects, recording in high-def, mixing more than two stereo music/sound tracks and are happy with a few common input and output formats....these are the way to go. ... ... ... I've used 'em all. Even with Premiere on my home computer, I will sometimes use moviemaker or showbiz. I use Avid at work and love it, but (again) I still use the others for quick clips that require little or no editing.
